Excalibur Balance is a reactive, kinetic, sculpture that responds to the participant’s physiological state, which is a combination of autonomic and volitional activity. Too much, or too little effort and the rotating top of the sculpture becomes increasingly difficult to move. Only if the participant applies the precise amount of conscious effort, while maintaining a specific unconscious state, will the sculpture freely rotate. The freedom of movement, of the installation, is associated with the balance of the autonomic and non-autonomic aspects of the participant’s nervous system.
